KRYSTEXXA®
Infusion Therapy
KRYSTEXXA® infusion therapy is a prescription medication administered via IV to treat chronic refractory gout. The medication lowers uric acid levels and has been shown to remove years of uric acid buildup in the body. Your doctor may prescribe KRYSTEXXA infusion therapy when other methods of treatment have failed at improving symptoms of chronic gout, including pain and swelling.
About KRYSTEXXA® Infusion Therapy
KRYXTEXXA infusion therapy was approved by the FDA in 2010 for the treatment of chronic gout and its symptoms. It’s the only treatment for chronic gout that helps control symptoms by changing uric acid into allantoin—a water-soluble substance that is flushed from the body when you urinate.
Doctors may prescribe KRYSTEXXA to patients who have not had success with other treatments to control their symptoms of gout. KRYSTEXXA infusion therapy has been shown to lower uric acid levels within the first day of receiving treatment, and patients have had success in completely clearing visible tophi.
Conditions Treated by KRYSTEXXA® Infusion Therapy
KRYSTEXXA infusion therapy is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat patients with chronic gout. This painful disease develops from a build-up of uric acid levels in the body. Uric acid forms sharp crystals within the joints, most commonly the big toe, which leads to inflammation and intense pain associated with gout.
Gout attacks are often attributed to diets high in purine. Red meats, some seafoods, sugar, and alcohol all contain higher levels of purine and have been associated with the development of gout when consumed in large amounts. However, congestive heart failure, obesity, kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes, and family history can also increase your risk of developing gout.
KRYSTEXXA® Cost
The out-of-pocket KRYSTEXXA cost will vary depending on your insurance coverage. If you have questions about your coverage, contact your insurance provider.
Many patients with commercial insurance qualify for the Horizon Commercial Co-pay Program which can help cover the KRYSTEXXA cost. For more information on KRYSTEXXA cost and financial resources, you may visit https://www.krystexxahcp.com/rheumatology/support-and-resources/reimbursement-center.
No patient should go without necessary treatment due to financial limitations. If you have questions about KRYSTEXXA cost or financial assistance opportunities, contact a member of our FlexCare team.
What to Expect During KRYSTEXXA® Infusion Therapy
When you receive KRYSTEXXA infusion therapy as a treatment for chronic gout, you are likely to get an infusion once every other week for six months. The exact course of treatment will be decided by your doctor and based on your individual medical needs.
Before your infusion, your doctor may require a lab test to measure your uric acid levels. Unlike other infusion centers, FlexCare Infusion Centers provide on-site, day-of uric acid testing. That means you don’t have to schedule another appointment before you receive treatment.
KRYSTEXXA Side Effects
Most KRYSTEXXA side effects are mild, and could include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, infusion site reactions, hypertension, arthralgia, and pain in the extremities. Some patients experience gout flares as a KRYSTEXXA side effect. This is a sign the medication is working, and often subsides as treatment continues.
If you have concerns about KRYSTEXXA side effects, contact your referring provider.
